Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Language Centre is to serve as a centre for language learning, teaching, research and providing consultancy services. A key focus will be on the upgrading of competence in the use of English. The Centre endeavours to serve students and the staff of the University as well as the wider community. It aims to develop as a national centre for excellence in language development.

Objectives

• To act as a unit servicing students in all faculties, enhancing and upgrading English usage and study at tertiary level, especially for first undergraduates.

• To offer communication and study skills in English (CSSE) to all first year university students.

• To offer special and short courses to upgrade English Language, Namibian and Foreign languages from beginner to advanced levels.

• To develop and produce language learning and teacher training resource materials for centre students and staff.

• To promote a culture of reading, critical thinking, self-study habits, and encourages use of reference facilities in the library for academic communication.

• To provide the highest quality language instruction in English, Namibian languages and international languages aimed at national development and multi-cultural communication.

• To offer consultancy services to national and local authorities in areas such as language curriculum design, materials development and assessment, and serve the requirements of large and small groups in the public and private sectors through provision of specialized and technical language training and services.

• To undertake applied research into language usage.

COURSES

Foreign students should have a study permit/ visa to enroll, and are advised to apply for their study permit/ visa before they leave their country of origin.
