Documentation Centre

Human Rights and Documentation Centre aims to collect, process and disseminate human rights information in Namibia and Southern Africa at large.

The Scope of our Collection

The materials collected so far, include more than 4000 documents including monographs, reports, newspaper clippings, periodicals and a few videos and CD-ROMs. The Documentation Centre is a research Centre, which means materials do not circulate outside the building with the exception of UNAM lecturers.

Organization

The Collection is computerized and materials are recorded using the INMAGIC software. The HURIDOCS bibliographic standard format is used to record the materials. The Centre uses Universal Declaration of Human Rights classification to arrange its publications on the shelves. A copy can be obtained from the Documentation staff.

Services

The Documentation Centre provides the following services in;-

  • Direct access to its collection through its publication database. Entries in the database can be searched by author, subject, date of publication, publisher or geographic regions;

  • Current awareness services to Law Faculty staff and students;

  • Selective dissemination of information to human rights lecturers and final year students who are doing their dissertation;

  • News paper clippings on different human rights issues in Namibia;

  • Photocopying services;

  • Video viewing on special request by different groups;

  • Displaying of human rights publications on different occasions;

  • Compiling bibliographic on human rights issues for researchers (on request);

  • Electronic library services; and

  • Referral services

Clientel

Admission to the Centre is open to everybody. In addition, users may be asked by the staff of the Centre to identify themselves by filling in a questionnaire. This information helps the Centre to collect statistical data in order to facilitate decision making process.
