COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH: ENGLISH FOR GENERAL COMMUNICATION
This course is offered on FOUR levels. The main objective of this course is to upgrade the students’ standard of English. Although the course comprises four levels and each level is to some extent a complete unit, students are encouraged to complete the 8 courses.
Basic Level
Target Group: Applicants who have little or no knowledge of English.
Content: At this level we concentrate on pronunciation of English words. Students learn basic vocabulary and language skills such as the correct use of tenses. Because this is a basic level, students are taught to speak the language to be able to communicate their needs to others. Students also learn to write simple letters and express their ideas on paper. Listening comprehension is given much attention. This course mostly caters for foreign learners.
Elementary Level
Target Group: Applicants with some knowledge of English, who wish to upgrade their English proficiency.
Content: This course is very similar to the Basic course in the sense that it concentrates on vocabulary and language skills. It assumes, however, that the student has a basic knowledge of English. At this stage, the level of English used in the classroom is more advanced than that of the Basic course. Students are expected at the end of the course to be able to speak without resorting to the use of gestures to make themselves understood. Writing is also at a more advanced level and includes simple business letters. Listening comprehension is still a vital component.
Intermediate Level
Target Group: Applicants who have a reasonable command of English but lack confidence to use the language fluently.
Content: In this course we continue to build on what has been taught in the previous course, always improving the level of English usage. Students are now given both listening and written comprehension. Language skills continue to be taught on a contextual basis. At this level, students are expected to be able to take part in group work to present arguments. Students are expected to debate current issues verbally and write short factual essays to present their point of view clearly. Language work becomes more complicated and vocabulary used in class is far more advanced. Much of the work done, concentrates on individual needs of the students, because we are dealing with mature students. Written work is more flexible. Students write letters, memoranda, etc., which are related to their line of work. Listening comprehension is still given much attention.
Advanced Level
Target Group: Applicants with a good command of English who wish to upgrade writing and speaking skills and gain confidence in English usage.
Content: Students are expected to have a good command of the language (especially if they have completed the previous courses) so that they can now concentrate on more complex pieces of writing such as business memoranda, notices, summaries, letters of enquiry, etc. Speaking activities include introducing speakers, making presentations of products, advertising both verbally and in a written form. Listening activities require note‑taking and reporting. Language skills at this stage include the use of the passive voice as often required in the business world. All language skills are taught on a contextual basis. This course prepares the student for the English for Administrators Courses.
Materials: Course books for Basic, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced will be announced. Contextual exercises devised according to students' needs from newspapers, magazines, audio- visual tapes.
Duration: 4 hours per week – approx. 6 months (offered every semester).
Watch also the press for details of registration.
Assessment: Attendance (85%), tests and examination (50% pass).
ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION: ENGLISH FOR ADMINISTRATORS
This series of courses is aimed specifically at people in administrative positions both in the public and private sectors. It is offered at three levels and once again, it is advised that students complete all levels. The course is designed to assist professionals who hold positions of responsibility to express themselves effectively in English. We approach the course from the viewpoint that time is an important commodity and the best way to save time is to express oneself in understandable and purposeful English from the outset. Students are taught to be brief, concise and to the point. This is the essence of the course. Some language skills are still taught on a contextual basis, but students are expected to have mastered the basic language skills at this stage.
Administrators Intermediate
Target Group: Persons with a good command of English who wish to perfect their skills for administrative purposes.
Content: The content of this course is similar to that of the Advanced Level for General Communication. However, it is assumed that the basic knowledge of writing business letters, memoranda, etc. already exists and the student’s command of English is good such that he/she already uses these skills. These skills are then refined to some extent. Activities now require some inference to be made by students, i.e. "reading between the lines". Attention is paid to reading and using body language. Proper paragraphing for business purposes is taught with the emphasis on clarity, conciseness and comprehensibility. Written, audio and visual advertisements are analyzed to see whether they convey the message effectively. Circular letters and memoranda are examined and used for practical purpose in class. These are often refined for clarity and effectiveness.
Some communication theory is taught at this level so that students understand exactly how communication takes place and thereby avoid communication breakdown and prevent misunderstanding.
Administrators Advanced
Target Group: Those who have completed the Intermediate Administrators course or who have obtained good results in The Advanced level of the General Communication course.
Content: At this level speaking and writing receive equal attention. Students are expected to make full presentations or speeches geared to their working environment. Vocabulary is advanced by means of fairly complex contextual language exercises, which are based on current affairs. Writing is directed according to the needs of the students as far as possible. Amongst other things, students are expected to write minutes and reports, and analyse curriculum vitae’s, motivate requests and prepare themselves for interviews. Students are expected to edit their own work and that of their peers. Full oral presentations with visual illustration and use of audio-visual equipment are expected. These presentations are normally related to students' work. Communication theory is taught in greater detail.
Administrators Effective Writing
Target Group: Those who have passed both the Advanced level of the General Communication course and the Administrators Advanced course and persons who have an excellent command of English but seek to improve their written English.
Content: This course will concentrate on refining writing skills already learnt in the previous courses and add to these, skills such as writing good reports, minutes, summaries and effective speeches. To achieve this we will concentrate on form, logic, textual analysis and incorporate this in the students' own working environment and responsibilities.
Materials: Course book: Communication for Managers and Secretaries by Marais and Bell. (For sale at the UNAM Bookshop). Authentic circulars, memoranda, etc. are used for analyses. Current affairs are discussed. Role play is used as a method. Students prepare and present authentic oral presentations.
Duration: 4 hours per week ‑ approx. 6 months (offered every semester).
Watch press for details of registration.
Assessment: Attendance (85 %), tests and examination (50% pass).
