LAND PROGRAMME
The rationale of the Land Programme is to conduct research, specifically in the historic land reformissues (e.g. land division and distribution; land utilization; socio-economic characteristics of rural/ communal/ commercial land; land management; impact analyses; legal and financial issues).
Programme Areas
Through research, the Land Programme tasks itself to support land reform in the communal and commercial sectors. In addition, the program will support the development of community and regionally based structures to assist in the decentralization of land management.
Research Areas:
- Commercial Farmland
- Communal Farmland
- Urban Land
Completed Activities
Broadening access to Land Markets: A five year project that runs through 2004 which examines the extent to which land markets are serving as a vehicle for land redistribution in Namibia as well as the extent to which changes in tenure status affect levels of investment. This project is part of a regional initiative with additional components undertaken in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Collectively the research is carried out in partnership with the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Natal, and the Land tenure center at the University of Wisconsin. Funding is provided from USAID via the BASIS Project.
