Herman Beyer is a born Namibian and went to school in Windhoek and Swakopmund. He obtained all his tertiary qualifications from Stellenbosch University and has been a University of Namibia staff member since September 1997, following four years of secondary school teaching in Swakopmund. He was appointed head of the newly formed Department of Language and Literature Studies when it was established in January 2008, following a merger between the former Departments of African Languages, English and Germanic & Romance Languages.
