Member, Editorial advisory Board of International Sociology: Journal of the International Sociological Association (ISA) 1993 - 2004. I helped to evaluate articles for publication in this journal in the area of development and other things relevant to the third world (and especially Africa). I am also a member of the ISA’s Community Development research committee.

External Examiner of the Sociology Department at Legon campus of the University of Ghana (2007 - present). I assess the standards that are being followed by the Sociology department of that university. I do this by advising on the curriculum and by going through student examination scripts and research reports.

Social Science representative to the UNESCO social science sector committee of Zambia (1987-91). I advised on how best UNESCO would promote the social science sector in Zambia

President of the Southern African Universities Social science Conference (SAUSSC). This is the premier social science organization in the Southern African Development Community region. I have helped organize a number of its annual conferences including the ones in Zimbabwe (1993) and South Africa (1996). As a matter of fact I co-wrote the proposal for the 17th SAUSSC held in Zimbabwe. The proposal that attracted funding for the conference was on Resource degradation and depletion and sustainable development.
