RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the traditional strongholds of the academic, research and community outreach structures at UNAM. It is instrumental to the advancement of the scientific discourse pertaining to the philosophical, linguistic, spiritual, psychological, and artistic elements of humanness. In addition to the numerous undergraduate and graduate degrees on offer, the Faculty also offers four well-designed diploma courses, thus providing students, including those who do not meet the traditional entry requirements.
Professor Kingo Mchombu

Kingo Mchombu is Professor and Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Namibia. Formerly he was head of Information and Communication Studies Department at University of Namibia (1997-2005). His expertise is in information and knowledge sharing for the development of grassroots groups in Africa. His work is informed by research and teaching in the areas of communication for development, health communication, knowledge management, and strategic marketing of information services.
He has published a book onknowledge sharing for community development (2004), Three monographs on village reading rooms (1995), rural development information needs (1993) and libraries and literacy (2006). He has several journal articles on rural developmentand poverty eradication (1993, 2002, 2003), and African librarianship (1992, 1995, 2001, 2005). He has several papers on public librarianship (1985, 1984). He has also written on knowledge management (2007, 2006) and indigenous knowledge management (1991; 2004). He holds various qualifications from Dar Es Salaam University, Tanzania (BA), Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship (University of Wales, College of Librarianship, Aberstwyth), and a Masters and PhD degree from Loughborough University, UK. He sits on the boards of the following national and international organisations:Book Aid International, London, UK; National Institute for Democracy (NID), Namibia, and Information and Knowledge Network, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
He has also worked, from time to time, on projects supported by Oxfam, Canada; International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Nairobi office; and UNESCO.
Prof. Mchombu is on the editorial board of several African and international refereed journals: Information Development (UK), International Information and Library Review (USA), Namibia Development Journal, and Knowledge Management for Development Journal (Netherlands).

Dr. Fred J. Mwilima

Dr. Fred Joshua Mwilima has been lecturing in media studies for the past nine years. Dr. Mwilima comes from a journalistic background starting as a liaison officer, journalist and climbed the ladder to news editor before becoming a lecturer. Dr. Mwilima has conducted workshops and consultancies for government, NGOs and UN organisations in media related work. He has been involved with MISA Journalism Award, FNB Sports Journalism Awards as well as the SADC journalism Awards. Dr. Mwilima has also been involved with UNESCO’s plans to come up with a curriculum for journalists in Africa starting from Lusaka’s workshop in 2000 and the last workshop at Rhodes University, South Africa.
Dr Mwilima holds an MA in Journalism, MSC in Information Science, Diploma in Nutrition, doctoral degree in Diet and Nutrition and other certificate courses in Strategic Health Communication and Behavioural Change. Dr. Mwilima is a consultant and media trainer of trainers as well as in health communication. His MA research focused on “The training needs of Namibian journalists” andhis MSc research was on “The Development and Application of ICT in Namibian Schools.” His doctoral research work was on “The effects of foods and lifestyles on health.”
Dr Elisha Chiware

Dr. Elisha Chiware has been lecturing at UNAM since 2004. His area of expertise is information needs in the SME sector and the diffusion of ICT. Prior to UNAM, he worked as a Librarian at both the University of Botswana and the University of Zimbabwe.
Dr Chiware recently completed his PhD from the University of Pretoria where he undertook to explore business information needs, seeking patterns and information services in the small, medium and macro enterprises (SMME) sector in Namibia. He also holds an undergraduate and Masters degree from the University of Zimbabwe and Indiana University, USA, respectively.
Chiku Mchombu

Mrs. Chiku Mnubi Mchombu has a Masters in Library and Information studies from University of Botswana. In addition, she has a Degree in Social Sciences majoring in Accounting and Public Administration from the University of Botswana. Furthermore, she has a Diploma and Certificate in Library studies as well as other certificates including Certificates on Human Rights program and Gender in Development.
She is teaching on part-time basis courses on Special Libraries and Documentation Centres, Collection Development and Basic Information Science in the Information Studies Department.
Her areas of research interest include: Information provision on HIV/AIDS; Orphans and Vulnerable Children and Information and Human Rights.
Samra Aochamus

Ms Samra Aochamus holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland and a Masters in International Public Relations from the University of Wales. She has managed two public relations consultancies Insite Communications and Crystal Communications.
Ms Aochamus is the newest member of the Department, joining the team full time in 2008. She has taught on a part-time basis at UNAM since 1999, first in the Faculty of Education and the Language Centre.
She teaches classes in Public relations, Advertising, and Marketing Communications. Her research interests are public relations and corporate social responsibility, standardisation issues in multinational marketing and public relations, the globalisation of public relations and the effect of national identity on promotional strategies.
Catherine Margaret Beukes-Amiss

Ms Beukes-Amiss holds an Hed Sec (Unam), BA Library and Records Management (Unam), MSc Electronic Information Management (Robert Gordon University: Scotland). She teaches Information Storage and Retrieval Software – WINISIS, Introduction to Information Communication Technology, Analysis and Evaluation of Internet Search Engines, Web Page Design, Collection Management and Technical Services
In terms of research, she is mainly interested in the following areas: the usage and application of Information Communication Technology ICT) across the curriculum in tertiary as well as secondary educational institutions; the use and application of new Web 2.0 technologies like Wikis and Blogs applicable to eLearning; the establishment of multi-stakeholder eLearning Centres within Namibia and beyondstudying the qualities and roles of eLearning champions manifested in an ICT driven education sector and scalability and Sustainability of eLearning processes as implemented by champions in institutions of Higher Learning
Catherine Nengomasha

Ms Cathrine Nengomasha has been teaching at UNAM since 2001, her specialisation is records and archives management. She has many years of experience as the principal archivist at the Botswana National Archives and Records Service. She has also held senior positions at the National Archives of Zimbabwe.
Ms Nengomasha holds an undergraduate honours degree from the University of Zimbabwe and a Masters in Library Science from Syracuse University in New York. She is currently finalising her PhD research in the Management of Electronic Records in the Namibian Public Service in the Context of E-Government.
