I was born on 25 November 1952 in Johannesburg and grew up in the workers class suburb of Mayfair West. I graduated from high school, where I played rugby for the first team in 1969 and 1970, with a first class and a distinction in History in Dec. 1970.

I started work as a prosecutor in 1975. When I started studying theology, I worked as a journalist for Beeld in Johannesburg, Pentecostal Pastor for twenty years. Director of the Human Rights and Documentation Centre, UNAM since 2002. Dean since January 2008.
