Department of Computer Sciences

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Namibia offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate Computer Science and Information Technology Programmes. Apart from the regular curriculum modules, the Department runs CISCO and IT-Essential(s) courses to both regular and public students. The Department also runs a Virtual Classroom Project, under the South Africa – Norway Tertiary Education Development (SANTED) programme, in collaboration with the Rhodes University of South Africa.

SANTED PROGRAMME

The immediate outcome of the initiative was to fast-track selected candidates from the University of Namibia (UNAM) to a Master Degree by research at Rhodes University. The mid-term outcome was to strengthen the staff complement at UNAM through the return of the candidates that had received Masters Degree from Rhodes. The long-term outcome was the design and implementation of research enterprises that benefited the Universities and the region in which they are situated.

   

CISCO and IT-Essentials

Provides online courses, interactive tools, and lab activities to prepare individuals for ICT and networking careers in virtually every type of industry. Cisco’s certification programs certify the competence of Internetworking professionals in routing, switching and connectivity.

 

At undergraduate level, the Department of Computer Science offers the following programmes:

Bachelor of Science Computer Science Major and Information Technology Minor

Candidates opting for this major will also take the minor in Information Technology such as:   

Introduction to Information technology, Introduction to Web Design, Telecommunications,    

Networking and Emerging Technologies, Introduction to Network Security and Advanced Web

Programming.

Bachelor of Science Computer Science Major and Mathematics Minor

Candidates in this major will also take some Mathematics courses like Analytical Geometry,

Complex Numbers and Matrices, Set and Numbers, Pre-Calculus, Numerical, Introduction to Statistics, 

and Linear Algebra.

Bachelor of Science Computer Science Major and Statistics Minor

Candidates in this group, in addition to their major, will take the following courses: Descriptive  

Statistics, Introduction to Probability, Probability Theory, Statistical Inferences, Sampling Methods,

and Nonparametric and Categorical Data Analysis.

At postgraduate level, the Department of Computer Science offers the following programmes:

Master of Science ( Information Technology) (by Coursework)

The Department offers a two-year Masters in Information Technology by course work and research. In the first academic year the candidates do course work. In the second year of study, the candidates carry out research under the supervision of lecturers.
