Environmental Biology

Dealing with global and local environmental issues has become a pre-occupation and duty of everyone, because the environment affects everyone. Global issues such as climate change, extinction of species, decrease in biodiversity, and pollution are receiving more attention with an increasing world population, while local environmental issues such as the water quality, land degradation, and pollution in rural and urban areas affect the life of people directly in the short term.

The environmental section of the Department of Biological Sciences hosts active and vibrant personnel involved in a wide range of research topics including host-parasite interactions, rangeland management, disturbance ecology, vegetation dynamics, water quality control, resource management, and desertification.

As a student studying in the Department your theoretical knowledge will be supplemented by a wide range of practical field work and field courses. These are aimed at adequately preparing students for a wide range of careers both in Namibia and abroad. Field excursions include visits to Gobabeb Desert Research station, NARREC animal rehabilitation center, Etosha National Park, Swakopmund coastal area, and various freshwater dams to name a few.
