Short Biography

Mr Davids, born in the dusty town of Khorixas, is a Namibian who served UNAM as a Technical Assistant, as Tutor, and then as Lecturer --- all in the Physics Department, in Windhoek. He is a member of the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) international collaboration. H.E.S.S. is a astrophysical instrument situated in Namibia --- thanks to the Namibian clear skies, amongst others.

Mr Davids is fascinated by science, in particular physics, simply because physics strives to explain nature --- physics is the study of “why things are the way they are”.  He says, “physics is a painful fun, especially when you realize how little you know”.

Academic interest/ expertise

Astrophysics (in particular Gamma-ray Astronomy)
Astrophysics is the physics of the Universe. Astrophysicists study celestial objects such as galaxies, stars, planets, the interstellar medium, etc. Gamma-ray astronomy is a branch of astrophysics, and is the astronomical study of the cosmos with gamma rays. Gamma rays are very high energy photons emitted in certain extremely violent stellar regions, such as supernova explosions, in the Universe. A state-of-the-art gamma-ray telescope system, H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System), located in Namibia serves as a typical example of a “gamma-ray sensitive eye” --- enabling astronomers to look deep into the Universe by tracing the origins of gamma-ray photons.
