The Library maintains open and closed collections, the majority of which are organised according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC). Your key to these collections is the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) which is accessible through the Library web page. You can find the location and availability of collections through search options: Keyword, Author, Title, ISBN etc. If you need help, please ask the library staff or go to the Reference Services Librarian on the ground floor.

Open Shelf Collection
This is the main collection of the library materials, where users can have free access to books and periodicals on the First and Second Floor. Registered users may borrow these items within the terms stipulated in the Procedures and Borrowing Privilege of the library.

General Reference
This is located on the First Floor and includes atlases, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, thesaurus and directories. Items from this collection must be used within the library and preferably within the reference area.

Periodicals Collection
Located on the First Floor. Users may search titles through OPAC or browse new titles displayed on the shelves. Only bound volumes may be borrowed for a maximum period of 3 days.

Short Loan Section
Items, for which usage is expected to be high (prescribed), are placed on reserve in the Short Loan Section on the recommendation of the lecturers. Two items may be borrowed simultaneously for a period of two hours only. Items may be taken out overnight from 20:00 but must be returned by 08:00 the next day. The primary objective of this section is to make limited copies of items that are prescribed to lecturers available to as many users as possible. Current newspapers and popular magazines are also available here.

The following materials are also available at Short Loan Section:

Law Reference material, South Africa Law reports, Audio-Visual Material and Sheet music
Users can borrow  CD-ROMs and DVD`s and can make use of a multimedia computer viewing room available on the second floor.

Inter-lending and Document Delivery
Materials not available in the Library can be obtained on behalf of the user, from other libraries or organisations. It is normally restricted to UNAM staff and postgraduate students, but transactions for undergraduates may be undertaken upon recommendation from the relevant lecturer.

Computing Services
Internet access and word processing is available to registered students for one hour slots only. The computer will prompt students to log in with their student number e.g. Username -type letter s infront of the student number (s201011010), the password is 8 zeros (00000000). Students are advised to change their login password as soon as they log in the system. Printing facilities available and students are expected to buy a minimum of N$20.00 printing credit at the Cashier at administration building.

Special Collections

Located on the Lower Ground Floor and contains items such as Namibiana, government publications, dissertations, pamphlets, newspapers and clippings. Archival Collection

Located in the basement. Archival materials are not reflected in the Library catalogue, but can be searched through a separate database at: http://wwwisis.unam.na. Enquiries must be directed to Archival Staff, Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:30. Tel. 206 3692/3228. Electronic Resources
The Library subscribes to several electronic journals and online databases, which include documents downloadable in full-text. There are also a number of Open Access databases available, to which the Library web page will direct you. Subscription databases can be accessed at the library website, http://library.unam.na/libr-e-resources.htm

Guidance on how to access electronic resources on-campus and off-campus, is provided by the Reference Desk Librarian at the Ground floor.
