Dear UNAM Community
Access to Elsevier’s Scopus and ScienceDirect databases
In line with the strategy to accelerate research, UNAM Management has approved the Library to subscribe to two key online Elsevier’s electronic databases namely; Scopus and Science Direct. The UNAM community is therefore kindly requested to make maximum use of these resourceful databases to beef up their research output and in the process ensuring a good return on investment.
Scopus (Now accessable)
Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research. It caters for the Science, Technical, Medical, Social Sciences (including Arts and Humanities) subject categories and embraces the open web-based tools similar to Google Scholar. The target audiences of Scopus are the academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, subject specialists, and librarians. SCOPUS search results include web sites, patents, as well as journal articles. You can access Scopus at the following URL: http://www.scopus.com/home.url

ScienceDirect database (commencing: 1 January 2012)
ScienceDirect is the full-text journals service from Elsevier. ScienceDirect is one of the most comprehensive databases of primary literature available in the sciences. It contains the full text of more than 2500 peer reviewed journals (Science Direct contains over 10 million full text articles) in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences. It also contains abstracts from the core journals in the major scientific disciplines. Although access to the ScienceDirect database will only be activated on 01 January 2011, Elsevier has offered a Trial Period to UNAM as from 1 November to 31 December 2011. You can access ScienceDirect at the following URL: http://www.sciencedirect.com

Authentication
The resources are authenticated using UNAM Internet Protocol Address (IP) i.e. when on-campus you do not need to login. When off-campus or using your own Internet connection like 3G from Telecom, Leo or MTC, you access the resources via the “Off-Campus Access” link (http://ezproxy.unam.na/login) on the library Website. However, for personalized features such saving searches and results, you will be required to register for a personal account on either Scopus or ScienceDirect.
Training/Support
Elsevier has offered to provide training to the UNAM Community on the use of Scopus and ScienceDirect databases on Friday, 25 November 2011. The Library will make another announcement as this date comes closer but you can already diarize this date so that it is included in your activities plan for November.
