NAMIBIAN BIOTECHNOLOGY ALLIANCE

(NABA)
 

Was established in 1996 as an inter-disciplinary interest group composed of specialists from government, para-statal organization and the private sector. NABA was launched in May 1998 and it is housed under the ministry responsible for science and technology (Ministry of Higher Education Training and Employment Creation) and it is also a working group under the National Biodiversity Programme (Ministry of Environment and Tourism)

NABA is being chaired by Dr Martha Kandawa Schulz, head of Chemistry Department, University of Namibia

Objectives:

  • represent various sectors of science and technology currently and potentially involved in biotechnology and biosafety
  • plays as body for the interim period until the Draft Biosafety Legislation will be approved
  • liaise and endeavor to cooperate with the relevant authorities for the establishment, recognition and enforcement of legislation and legal implication in respect of the use of biotechnology
  • encourage and coordinate research and projects in respect of biotechnology and biosafety 
  • generate interest and active participation in biotechnology and biosafety activities
  •  create awareness both locally and internationally of the aims and objectives of NABA and encourage public debate on biotechnology and biosafety issues
  • raise funds necessary for the promotion and implementation of the objectives of NABA
NABA Membership

NABA  is a independent body made up by all relevant stakeholders and all line ministries with expertise in the field (see naba members)
 

NABA current activities

driving the implementation of our National Biosafety Framework;

(see also the Namibian Biosafety Clearing House)

implementing our recent (1999) Cabinet-approved national policy and guidelines for, biotechnology research and related activities in Namibia; 

reviewing the Draft Biosafety Bill which is in its final stage before submission to the relevant authorities 

re-writing the National Biosafety Regulations to be in line with the final Draft  Biosafety Bill 

assessing the evolving national status of biotechnology and biosafety activities, plans, and institutional capacities; 

reviewing the technical safety guidelines for the practice of biotechnology in agriculture, industry, health, mining and other fields.
