Research Management

The Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Research is responsible for the management of research and publications at UNAM. Under this Office, the responsibility of coordinating research and publications is vested in the Research & Publications Office (RPO) headed by a Research Coordinator whose overall responsibility is to administer and coordinate research at the university. In discharging its duties, the RPO is guided by various UNAM and national documents including the UNAM Research Strategy, UNAM’s Third Five Year Strategic Plan, Research Strategies of Faculties/Centers, Namibia’s Vision 2030, the Third National Development Plan (NDP III) and the Education and Training Sector Improvement Programme (ETSIP) document. The RPO is also responsible for administering internal funding grants and ensures research quality assurance. Through the Research & Publications Committee, the RPO supports research planning and research policy implementation at the University. In addition, the RPO contributes to academic staff development through a series of targeted interventions to enhance research capacity. The Office facilitates and supports other research activities that may arise from strategic partnerships and formal agreements with various research and academic institutions within and outside Namibia.

Research Areas

Faculties and Centres at UNAM have identified key focal areas for research that address strategic objectives of the University and those set by the Government. Information on specific research programmes can be found under the respective Faculty/Centre page on this website. Our research approach is to be locally relevant by addressing local research needs but remaining internationally competitive and engaged. UNAM recognizes the value of interdisciplinary, collaborative research as a key to achieve international competitiveness. The ever-changing global environment, human needs and tastes, and other global trends dictate that we constantly review our research programmes in order to address the increasing complexity of global research questions. Research in various fields has been steadily growing in all Faculties and Centres at UNAM.
